GRRL

James Mapley-Brittle, better known by the stage name GRRL, is an electronic music producer, DJ, and NTS Radio resident based in Durham, North Carolina. Having lived in Durham for most of his life, he has become a central figure in the local dance scene and is recognized for a high-energy sound that draws from an encyclopedic knowledge of music history, film, and technology. His aesthetic is heavily influenced by the industrial atmospheres of sci-fi horror movies and the visual design of vintage digital watches and sneakers.

His career began roughly a decade ago and quickly gained momentum through prolific output and a sharpened creative vision. Between 2019 and 2020, he released three full-length albums: Pay Attention, Marathon, and Odyssey. His music is frequently described as a fusion of techno, electro, jungle, and bass music. His work has earned praise from prominent figures in the electronic community, including Skrillex and A. G. Cook, and has led to collaborations with high-profile brands like Alexander Wang.

A significant part of his recent career involves a partnership with Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso under the name GRRL x Made of Oak. This duo released the EP Inertia in 2022 on the Psychic Hotline label, followed by the project Hardcore in 2025. In addition to his collaborative work, he continues to release solo projects such as the Side By Side EP and remains an active performer at regional events like the Slingshot and Hopscotch music festivals.

An encyclopedic knowledge of music history, film and technology... has helped Mapley-Brittle become a go-to figure in the Durham dance scene and beyond.
